There Are NO NSF/ANSI-61 Certified (SBR) Red Sheet Rubber Options For Drinking Water Applications

In a recent release from American Biltrite, it was noted that NSF International does not currently have any certified red SBR sheet rubber for drinking water applications.

After typical non-certified SBR testing disqualified the material when contaminants were found in the water, these impurities proved the material was not certifiable by NSF International. Some of these are serious human carcinogens including:

  • Free Styrene
  • Benzothiazole
  • Mercaptobenzothiazole
  • Nitrosamine
  • Phthalates
  • Lead

American Biltrite has compiled a detailed list of the devastating health effects of these contaminants. This report is available upon request. Once you resell the product it becomes your liability, your reputation. Any risk is too great when public health and safety is at stake.

According to Theresa Bellish, General Manager of Municipal and Recreational Water Product & Chemical for NSF International: There is no evidence of any certified red SBR sheet rubber product in our listings.

It is our duty as a supplier of this product to let purchasers know that if someone is providing red SBR sheet rubber in rolls using the NSF logo, they are giving false information and should be reported to NSF International’s Compliance Department.

As of January 2014, all components in potable water applications including gaskets and seals are to meet the low lead requirements by law. NSF-61 and NSF-372 certified products allow a product to meet these requirements.

NSF/ANSI-61 certification can be easily verified on NSF International’s website for authenticity.
